In just two decades, Askaneli has grown to become one of the most dynamic wineries in Georgia. The name is derived from the village “Askana” in Guria, which is the hometown of charismatic founder Gocha Chkhaidze. Guria is a byword in Georgia for eccentric creativity, exuberant performance, and a dry, dark wit. The Chkhaidze family are important Georgian business owners, with interests that include property development, as well as wine. Their entrepreneurial flair is reflected in their diverse product range of wines, chacha and brandy. The company has invested substantially in the wine sector, and owns wineries in Kakheti and Guria. As with many successful Georgian entrepreneurs, their interest in wine goes beyond the purely commercial, and they have dedicated considerable resources to developing Georgian wine culture, and have been involved in the project to bring back into production the indigenous Chkhaveri grape variety. The wine range includes classic European style wines, and a lovely range of Qvevri wines, called Dora.
You can enjoy these delicious wines at the Dartington Festival of Georgian wine from 13-15 October 2023.
