John Okurashvili established Okro’s Wines in 2004, after a career as a scientific software engineer and telecoms. He has 5.5 hectares near the ravishingly pretty town of Sighnaghi, in Kakheti. John cultivates his vineyards organically, without pesticides, weedkillers or other treatments and the wines are made without Sulphur or other additions. He is a champion of Georgian terroir and indigenous varieties and grows an impressive variety of different grapes on his small estate, including the familiar (Rkatsiteli, Mtsvane, Saperavi), and the lesser-seen (Budeshuri, Tsolikouri and Tavkveri). His wines are impressively pure, pristine, and stable with a notable elegance and lightness of touch. Sighnaghi is becoming a centre for boutique enotourism in Georgia, and John is one of several wineries highly engaged in welcoming visitors from around the world. Okro’s Wines are imported into the UK by Les Caves de Pyrene, a pioneer of natural wine and supplier to many of our best restaurants.
