Tsinandali PDO is in Kakheti, Georgia’s main winemaking region, lying to the east of Tiblisi. It’s is near Telavi, Kakheti’s main town. The PDO stretches from the wooded north-eastern foothills of the Gombori Mountains, along the right bank of the Alazani River, all the way the river’s edge.
Tsinandali PDO is linked to the princely Chavchavadze family – the poet Aleksandre Chavchavadze was the first to make Georgian wine famous in the XIX century. In 1835 he took out a loan of a million rubles for twenty years to develop the region. He built an underground cellar when he had Qvevris buried and made a factory for making barrels.
The PDO wines are white with peach and apricot flavours. They’re made Rkatsiteli and Mstvane kakhuri – the latter grape giving freshness to the blend. Saperavi is also grown here.
