Kardanakhi PDO is found in Georgia’s Gurjaani municipality. The vineyards are situated on the right bank of the Alazani river, between 350-750 meters above sea level. They span the north-eastern slopes of the Gombori mountains.
The wines produced here are white, using grapes Rkatsiteli, Khikhvi,Mtsvana Kakhuri – but also the red Saperavi grape.
The typical PDO wine is golden in colour, with aromas of walnut and French marigold. For a wine to be certified under the PDO label, ‘Karadanakhi’ wines have to be fortified. Wines have been produced in this way since 1926 – but today only one company makes this fortified wine.
